The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built in 1802 to prevent ships from getting stuck in the “Diamond Sand Bar”. Many ships ran aground on this sandbar, so the lighthouse was built. In 1802, the lighthouse was 1500 feet from the ocean. By the 1930s, much erosion had happened, and after several hurricanes, the lighthouse would be gone. So the lighthouse got moved. I got to go there and see the lighthouse. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is being restored. The restoration should be complete sometime in/after 2026. Why? Well, recreating a historic building takes time. Making it look almost the same as the original? Takes time. Why are they restoring the lighthouse you might ask? Well, like I said, it was built in 1802. That’s about 230 years of the same lighthouse. That’s a LOOOOOOOONG time!!!!! Imagine being alive for that long! (shudder) I hope that you come down to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and keep in touch!!
Yay, lighthouses!
